Alberta's Crowsnest Pass is the site of two of Canada's worst disasters including the Frank Slide and the Hillcrest Coal Mining Disaster.
The Frank Slide was a massive rockslide that buried part of the mining town of Frank in Alberta. At 4.10 a.m. on April 29, 1903 around 110 million tonnes of limestone rock slid down Turtle Mountain taking the lives of approximately 100 people.
The Hillcrest mine disaster, worst coal mining disaster in Canadian history, occurred at Hillcrest, Alberta on Friday, June 19, 1914, 9.30 am. Of the 237 men who entered the mine that day, only 48 were rescued, many of them suffering from the effects of toxic gases.
